Students Engage Local Elementary Students at Math Night

math-nightJunior education students had the opportunity to put their studies to work earlier this month at the fourth annual Math Night.

Hiram College welcomed 47 elementary students on March 6, 2014, to participate in math stations and games, designed by students in the Early Childhood Math Methods class.

The Hiram students developed the stations based on the six clusters of the Ohio Core Curriculum’s math standards for grades K-4:

  • Counting and Cardinality
  • Operations and Algebraic Thinking
  • Number and Operations in Base Ten
  • Number and Operations-Fractions
  • Measurement and Data
  • Geometry

Before working with the local elementary students, the education students created lesson plans indicating the standard they were covering, the objective and how they would differentiate for the students they encounter. They also created posters, directions and supplies for the activities.

What resulted was beneficial for both the Hiram students and local families.

“Students can see how important it is for educators to become involved in their community,” said Kathleen Maretka, director of student teaching and field experience in the education department. “Math Night gives our students a chance to interact with students and parents outside of the typical classroom setting. The elementary students that attend Math Night get a chance to experience how fun, interactive and important mathematics really is.”

Hiram College’s education department provides its students many curriculum-based and volunteer opportunities to engage with local students, including participation in Crestwood’s Earth Day, the World Fair, BioBuddies, Story Time, Power of the Pen and Education Club.
