At the ideablitz! competition on Nov. 7, students once again proved there are many future entrepreneurs here at Hiram College.

Thirty-five students presented 14 original concepts, both as teams and individuals, in the idea competition. Each team or individual had five minutes to present their concept, and the judging panel – Scott Altman, senior vice president for Raymond James; Joseph Koelliker, president and owner of Koelliker and Associates; Al Meszaros, founder and partner of Midwest Investments; Dan Moss, owner of UnSwing; and Chris Romeo, owner of Attention to Detail – then had a chance to ask questions.

They were judged on idea/concept, market and industry, technology attributes (if applicable), competitive attributes and pricing, uniqueness and quality of presentation.

Nicola Pedretti ’16, computer science major from Italy, took home first place and $500 with his social app, “What’s Good?”

Nicole Pueyo Svoboda ’15, nursing major from Laguna Beach, Calif., took home second place and $300 with her medical app and computer program “PreCheck.” She came up with the idea from observations in her nursing clinical rotations.

A team of students, Devonta Fleetion, of Youngstown, Michael Helco, of McDonald, Margaret Picolo, of Springfield, Richard Simpson, of Brunswick, and Andrew Torres, of Cape Coral, Fla., all seniors, took home third place and $200, for “Cleanliness Alert System,” an idea related to the self-service laundry industry.

Kay Molkentin, director of the Center for Integrated Entrepreneurship, which hosted the event, said she was especially impressed by the quality of students’ presentations this year.

“There were a lot of good ideas,” she said. “I’m hoping a lot of them will consider taking it further.”

During Spring 2014, the Center will host the ideabuild! competition, a similar competition that allows students to develop an idea even further.
