Men’s Basketball Picked Seventh in NCAC Preseason Coaches Poll

ncac-annivThe Hiram College men’s basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll that was released today.

Hiram finished with 34 points to place seventh of 10 teams.  Defending NCAC Tournament Champion The College of Wooster was tabbed as the favorite with 98 points and eight of 10 first-place votes.  Wittenberg University was second with 88 points and received two first-place votes and Ohio Wesleyan University rounded out the top three with 74 points.

The Terriers finished 11-14 overall last year and will return two starters and 13 letterwinners in 2013-14.  Highlighting this year’s returners will be senior Aaron Stefanov.  Last season, Stefanov led the team, and was fourth in the NCAC, in scoring averaging 16.1 points per game while shooting 40.8 percent (118-of-289) from the floor.  He also led the team and the conference in free-throw shooting converting 81-of-89 attempts (91.0 percent).

In addition, to Stefanov, Hiram will return four other seniors in Josh EdmondsonJustin Lonis,Matt Roman and Chris Zurowski.  Zurowski was the team’s top rebounder last year averaging 5.7 boards per game and was second in blocked shots with 17.  Edmondson averaged 5.5 ppg. coming off the bench and averaged 3.5 rebounds per game.  Lonis and Roman also came off the bench last season and averaged 3.8 and 2.8 ppg. respectively.

In addition, another player who saw significant playing time a year ago include sophomoreRiley Moore.  Moore played in all 25 games in a backup role.  Moore averaged 3.0 ppg. while shooting 41.5 percent (27-of-65).

Hiram will begin the 2013-14 campaign on Friday, Nov. 15 when the Terriers travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to compete in the TGI Fridays Tip-Off Tournament hosted by LaRoche (Pa.) College.  Hiram will take on host school LaRoche in its first game of the two-day event which is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
