Alumna, Professor attend Women in Computing Celebration

A Hiram College professor and recent alumna were among the nearly 3,000 people who attended the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing event Nov. 9-12 in Portland, Oregon.

The event brought together senior technical women from industry, government and academia, including professor and chair of Hiram’s computer science department Ellen Walker and Shanti Bramhacharya ’11, who majored in accounting and computer science while at Hiram. She is now an associate research specialist in the bacteriology lab at the University of Wisconsin.

Bramhacharya won the poster competition at last spring’s Ohio Celebration of Women in Computing, and through that, was granted a National Science Foundation scholarship to attend this event.

Walker was invited to attend an invitation-only portion of the conference, the Senior Women Summit. The summit provided insights for advancement and success in leadership roles and a venue where women could develop their network and increase their collective impact as a group.

” It was a fabulous opportunity to network and learn from some of the best-known, award-winning women in computing in both academia and industry,” Walker said. “I was honored to have been invited.”
