Social Justice Sit-In and Vigil – Jan. 22-24

As part of the college’s week-long commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Hiram community can participate in a symbolic sit-in for social justice and equality, modeled after the lunch counter sit-ins staged by Dr. King and others during the 1960s.

Between Tuesday, Jan. 22 and Thursday, Jan. 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., participants who sign up will be seated around the Welcome Desk in the Kennedy Center for 30 minutes. At that time, they can view a documentary, complete a questionnaire, sign a social justice pledge or focus on personal items such as completing schoolwork or grading papers. The goal is to have seats filled at all times from Tuesday through Thursday, so that the presence of participants will speak volumes to Hiram’s core value of diversity and inclusion.

Students, faculty and staff can sign up to participate in the sit-in at the Welcome Desk in the Kennedy Center.

To conclude the week of commemoration, on Thursday, Jan. 24, a candlelight vigil will take place from 4-4:30 p.m. in the Kennedy Center main lounge. The vigil will provide moments of reflection and fellowship and symbolize unity, hope and inclusion.
