Chemistry Club Receives Award from American Chemical Society

October 13, 2009

Hiram’s Chemistry Club has received a Commendable Award for its activities in 2008-2009 from the American Chemical Society.

Professor and Chair of Chemistry Collen Fried received a letter from Thomas Lane, president of the Society, informing her of the news.

“Over 360 reports were submitted, and of these 35 were presented an Outstanding and 68 Commendable so this is something notable for our club,” Fried said.

Fried also noted that the letter mentioned the good work of Professor Carol Shreiner who serves as the faculty adviser for the chapter.

“She really had invested quite a lot of time and effort into working with the group and making the activities meaningful to the whole community,” Fried said.

Shreiner helped to explain the award.

“In order to be considered for national recognition, the American Chemical Society Student Affiliate Chapter must submit a report to the national committee for peer review,” she said. “I served as a peer reviewer for chapter reports this year, although obviously not for our own report. The report details the activities, communication, finances and chapter business that occurred for the academic year.”

Each report is reviewed by three faculty advisers who provide feedback to the chapter for consideration in the future.

The 2008-09 award winning chapters will be recognized in the November/December issue of “in Chemistry” magazine and at the ACS Student Affiliates Chapter Award Ceremony that will be held at the 239th ACS National Meeting in San Francisco.

Shreiner also expressed her love of working with the club.

“Working with the Chemistry Club has certainly been one of the highlights of my time so far at Hiram,” she said. “The students are incredible, and they worked hard to earn this award. I’m so proud of them!”
