Men’s Basketball Defeated by Rutgers University-Newark (N.J.)

ARLINGTON, VA. — The Hiram College men’s basketball team was defeated by Rutgers University-Newark (N.J.) today (Saturday, Jan. 2) in its first game of the Marymount University Holiday Classic in Arlington, Va. [Game Stats]

With the loss, the Terriers are now 5-5 overall while the Scarlet Raiders improve to 8-3 overall for the season.

Rutgers-Newark never trailed in the game and outscored Hiram, 18-7, in the first 6:20 to reach its first double-digit lead. A jumper by junior All-North Coast Athletic Conference guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) sparked a 7-0 scoring run that got Hiram to within four points, 18-14, at the 11:53 minute mark. The Raiders responded with an 11-4 run of their own to extend the margin back to double figures, 29-18, with 7:31 left in the first half. Rutgers-Newark went on to lead by as many as 15 points on two occassions and had a 40-28 edge at halftime.

The Raiders continued to increase their lead in the second and led by as many as 34 points, 82-48, late in the period at the 5:26 mark. Rutgers-Newark would go on to an 85-59 victory.

Rutgers-Newark shot an impressive 56.7 percent (34-of-60) from the floor and held Hiram to 38.6 percent (22-of-57) shooting.

The Raiders had three players score in double figures led by DeShawn Singleton with a game-high 18 points on seven-of-11 shooting (63.6 percent). He also grabbed a game-tying high seven rebounds. Jame Johnson was second with 16 points followed by Phil Barnes with 14 points to go along with seven boards.

Hiram had one player score in double digits in junior forward Babajide Eniola (Washington, D.C./Seed Charter) with 14 points on five-of-10 shooting (50.0 percent).

Hiram will conclude the tournament tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 3) in the consolation game of the Marymount Holiday Classic. The Terriers will take on the loser of the Marymount-Goucher (Md.) College matchup at 2 p.m.
