Swimming and Diving Teams Defeated by Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College in Regular-Season Finale

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams were defeated by Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College this afternoon (Saturday, Jan. 31) in a non-conference dual meet in the regular-season finale and Senior Day at Alumni Memorial Pool. The Terrier women lost, 150-93, and the men lost, 78-64. Following today’s meet, the women end the regular season with a 3-8 overall record in dual meet competition and the men finish with a 3-7 overall record.
Individually for the women, the Terriers had four event winners led by senior Amy Kocka (Strongsville) who captured two events with top times in the 200-meter freestyle (2:18.17) and the 400-meter free (4:52.88). Joining Kocka to post winning marks was sophomore Claire Rachek (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) in the 800-meter free (10:44.96) and junior Katie Pierdomenico (Stow/Twinsburg) in the 100-meter free (1:03.92). The women also had a winning relay team with junior Gillian Millwood (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion College), senior Shalynn Twining (Wapakoneta), freshman Becca Szanto (Bainbridge) and Kocka combining to win the 200-meter free relay with a time of 1:59.91.
The men also had four individual event winners led by sophomore Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) who won two events in the 100-meter free (54.60 seconds) and the 200-meter breaststroke (2:33.15). Also touching the wall first for the men was junior Ben Adams (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge) in the 200-meter individual medley (2:40.68) and sophomore Adam Roark (Elyria/Catholic) in the 200-meter backstroke (2:34.47). Roark, sophomore Zach Wegman (Knoxville, Tenn./Bereon), sophomore Colin Kelly (Perrysburg) and sophomore Jim Griesmer (Chesterland/University School) combined efforts to win the 200-meter free relay with a mark of 1:48.07.
The Hiram swim teams will now prepare for the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Championships that begin on Thursday, Feb. 12 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. The College of Wooster will serve as the host school with the first event beginning on Thursday at 10 a.m.
