The Class of 2018 was officially initiated into the Hiram College community at Opening Convocation on Aug. 28, 2014.
To mark the occasion, faculty, staff and upperclassmen joined the new class in Hayden Auditorium, celebrating the beginning of a new academic year.
President Lori Varlotta, delivering her first convocation speech, discussed the “magic of Hiram.”
The “magic,” she said, is found in Hiram’s past, in its potential and in its pedagogy.
Student Senate President Emily Lewis ’17 also spoke, offering advice for the freshman class: “Most importantly, know you can make a difference,” she said, describing how just last year, she was elected Senate President, despite being new to the campus.
Vice President and Dean Robert Haak then led the class in initiation as they recited together:
“I affirm my commitment to the Hiram College Community, and I accept my responsibility to honor the College and myself by seeking the opportunity to fulfill with integrity the College’s mission for me and my fellow students, and by giving my best effort to all my endeavors.”
