For the second year in a row, Hiram College ranks first among Ohio liberal arts colleges in Washington Monthly’s “Best Bang for the Buck” list.

This list, part of the publication’s annual College Guide, ranks colleges based on the economic value students receive per dollar.

“There is no doubt that Hiram College is a great economic value,” said President Lori Varlotta. “But what makes our economic value distinctive is that it is coupled with a magic that permeates the campus and inspires students for life. It’s hard to describe, but talk to almost any of our alumni, and you’ll hear it in their voice and see it in their non-verbals. Hiram transforms lives, and that is priceless.”

Hiram fared well in the overall rankings as well. Washington Monthly ranks schools based on their contribution to the public good through three broad categories:

  • Social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students)
  • Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs)
  • Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country)

In the service category, Hiram ranked 41st of all liberal arts colleges for its service staff, courses and financial aid support, and 53rd for community service participation and hours served. Service learning is well integrated into Hiram’s liberal arts curriculum. Programs such as the annual day of service (Campus Day) and the Peace Corps Prep Program (one of three in Ohio) reflect an interest and commitment to civic engagement across campus.

In the social mobility category, Hiram ranked 44th, jumping 16 places from last year’s 60th ranking.

“Alumni stand united in this sentiment: no matter where students start their educational journey, Hiram positions them not only for a more successful career than would have otherwise been the case, but for a happier, more productive and service-oriented life,” Varlotta said.

Overall, Hiram ranked 82nd out of 246 liberal arts colleges.
